De-Skunking Your Dog or Cat: A Guide to Neutralizing Skunk Spray
Getting sprayed by a skunk is a common woe for both curious canine companions and adventurous feline friends. The good news is, that pungent odor doesn't have to linger forever. Here's what to do if your furry friend gets a surprise skunk shower:
Step 1: Isolate the Stinky Situation
First things first, contain the stink! Leash your dog or keep your cat contained in a well-ventilated area, like a bathroom or laundry room. This will prevent the skunk spray from permeating your furniture and carpets.
Step 2: DIY De-Skunking Solution (if necessary)
If you don't have a commercial skunk odor remover on hand, you can create a homemade solution. Important Note:Wear gloves for this process!
Mix together:
1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide
¼ cup baking soda
1 teaspoon of liquid dish soap (dishwashing soap)
Apply the solution:
Wear gloves and carefully massage the solution into your pet's fur, avoiding the eyes and mouth.
Be aware: Hydrogen peroxide can bleach dark fur, so consider a spot test on a hidden area first. Especially for cats, this may be difficult as they dislike getting wet. Be patient and focus on areas where the spray concentrated.
Rinse thoroughly:
Rinse the solution off your pet completely with clean water.
Step 3: Commercial Skunk Odor Remover
Commercial de-skunking products are readily available at pet stores and online. These are generally formulated to be gentler on your pet's fur and eyes than the homemade solution. Look for products specifically labeled for dogs or cats, as some may not be suitable for both.
Step 4: Bath Time!
After using the de-skunking solution (homemade or commercial), bathe your pet with a gentle pet shampoo specifically formulated for their fur type (dog or cat shampoo). Rinse thoroughly to remove any lingering odor or residue.
Step 5: Eye & Respiratory Irritation
If your pet got sprayed in the eyes, flush them gently with clean water or saline solution. For cats: This may be difficult,so flushing with a moistened gauze pad may be more manageable. If your pet is experiencing respiratory irritation, consult your veterinarian immediately.
Bonus Tip: While bathing your pet, consider wearing old clothes you don't mind getting a whiff of the skunk spray.
When in Doubt, Seek Professional Help
If the skunk spray seems particularly potent, your pet has gotten it in their eyes, or they are experiencing respiratory difficulties, err on the side of caution and consult your veterinarian. They can ensure your pet is properly cleaned and doesn't have any lingering health effects from the encounter.
With a little patience and these handy tips, you can neutralize that skunk spray and get your furry friend smelling fresh again in no time!
